expats!!

Ok so I'm really excited that in my International Comparative management class we are talking about you guys! (Expats!!) So i was wondering which of the 4 types of expats are you guys??

a.native--you completely adapted to the culture of the country you now live in (for most of you italy) and no longer consider yourselfs even americans

b. Free lancer-- you don't really belong to either country but rather follow your own dreams and desires.

c. Heart at home- you live abroad but your true alligence is to your home country.

d. Dual Citizens--you feel like you are a citzen of both countries...

So let me know what kind of expat you have become! :)

I see myself as a dual citizen. I am definitely American but am slowly being Italiacized.

Well, I'm not there yet, but I have lived there for a couple years before.

D) I feel completely at home in both places!

Hmmm... but of course, we may feel happy in Italy, but there's no doubt that our roots are else where, making one not 100% of either country, but part of both.

So sometimes you can't help but feel a little bit of "B".

:)

That's an interesting class!

I'm already a dual citizen Australian/American. I feel completely at home in both of my howetowns - New York and Sydney and understand both cultures very well. But this comes from growing up and going to school in both places. I don't think you can get this level of "dual citizenship" from moving to a place as an adult.

So this makes living in a third place (Italy) complicated. I don't think I fit into any of your categories really. I guess basically, I've got 2 countries already so I don't need a third one. But my national allegiance/identity is not easy to discern.

I would say D as I am a D. I have dual Australian and Italian. I feel at home in both places and it feels very normal to live in Italy...Strange to describe but perhaps I just fit in well here, or perhaps it is in my blood!

I am luckly though as I don't have visa issues like a lot of people.

I think I fall in the dual citizen category - even though we are just finishing our first month as expats! It's been a daily adventure but I find myself appreciating my home in the US more sometimes and at the same time craving to be more part of Italy as well!

(We finally got DSL hooked up today, so I'll be back in the swing of the blogosphere! :))
